How did I navigate working with a client that wanted to be involved in the design process?

My mom and her husband went into business with others to run an architectural materials company, and went straight to me for designing an identity and marketing materials. Now my mom is not a designer, but she does enjoy the creative aspects of business and wanted to be involved in the identity design process. Her and I collaborated in finding inspiration photos and sketching, which made the design process flow smoother especially since she was particular about what she wanted.
This was a great mother-daughter bonding activity and definitely a memorable first client experience.

My mom and I worked together by exchanging inspiration photos and sketches. I found it very amusing how she used her iPhone drawing settings to add edits and suggestions, and her more “old school” methods were a good reminder to involve more hand-drawn sketches in my process.
Coming to a Conclusion
After workshopping the two logos together, my mom and I were able to get the rest of the stakeholders on board. Working with my mom, who recognized the value of design, makes me hopeful that there are others in business that see design as a valuable asset and something that is worth investing in.
